VOICES

A Book of Anecdotes,
Excerpts and Photographs Reflecting
the Ballaghaderreen of Yesterday.
VOICES, a book of anecdotes, excerpts and photographs reflecting the Ballaghaderreen of yesterday, was launched in Durkin's of Ballaghaderreen on Friday, 29th August 2003. The book, produced by three local women, Mary Gallagher, Jane Casey and Margaret Murphy-Garvey contains some random, humorous, robust and even ghostly extracts.

The trio of two sisters and a close friend say that Ballaghaderreen and surrounding areas are being reshaped and reconstructed.

According to Mary Gallagher "this is not a bad thing with derelict sites being used fruitfully and private houses being used as public buildings, but this book is a backward glance of the familiar places of the town and hinterland fifty years ago, the old buildings, railways, businesses and the familiar faces. She said that the authors wanted to celebrate the idea of community in a time of globalisation, the sense of belonging of the pat, which will carry us into the future.

Margaret Murphy-Garvey described the project as "a labour of love". She said we all belong to someplace, Patrick Kavanagh spoke of "The stony grey soil of Monaghan" and Ballaghaderreen native Douglas Hyde knew all about a sense of place.

The book, which was in production for a year as photos were collected, pieces written and people identified, is targeted at the emigrant market. The authors say that small places are precious to those who pass through them, especially areas with high levels of emigration and in their compilation of extracts and photographs, they had in mind those who grew up in Ballaghaderreen and surrounding areas and then spent years abroad.

Mary Gallagher said that "Ballaghaderreen has huge emigration, some people returned periodically but some never returned and they hope the book finds a resonance with them, and gives an echo of an earlier time and of a sense of community once enjoyed".

Bishop Flynn spoke of the older fading memories that this book uproots, and how it will find a resonance with the older generation of Ballaghaderreen.

Form Principal of Ballaghaderreen Vocational School, Oliver Hynes, launched the book and he described the event as an "historical occasion, personal to everyone in Ballaghaderreen". He pointed out that while history is well catered for in education, "local history is the very stuff of life, it tells us about ourselves but is a neglected subject"
