Daniel Stokes was born in Dublin, living in Sandymount.
While living in Chicago he put himself through college
working different jobs. He graduated from Lewis University,
Illinois, with a degree in Building Technology, Applied
Science. While in college he met Dr. Margaret T. Burroughs,
who taught Art and Creative Writing. Her belief and
persistence not only inspired him to paint, but convinced
him the work was good enough to be exhibited.
His paintings are a mix of different influences that
range from Bosch, Monet, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Dali and
Chagal. Darkness, colour and light lay out in landscapes
of the mind contrasting themes; Security and vulnerability,
freedom and repression, hope and despair.
His first exhibition since returning home to Ireland
was titled "HOME". Many of these landscapes are local
Western and Northern scenes. This exhibition received
excellent reviews. Daniel, who lives in Ballaghaderreen,
Co. Roscommon, uses a spare room as his studio.

Women's Book Club was started in September 2002.
Since then we have met monthly to discuss a
variety of books, mostly fiction. The books
we discuss vary from 19th century classics to
those on the current Booker Short list, with
everything in between. Discussions are lively,
as our members usually have differing views.
One of the great things about the book club
is hearing a variety of opinions on each book.
We meet on the last Tuesday of each month at
8pm upstairs in Spells. New members are welcome.
Please contact Helen McHenry 086 605 3264
or come to one of our meetings.
